Laura Jones

Senior Director of Strategic Operations & PMO
Special Olympics International

About the Presentation

In her presentation, Laura will explore the unique application of project management principles in contexts where traditional project managers are not present, particularly in environments involving individuals with intellectual disabilities. This exploration highlights the critical need for project management concepts to be accessible and comprehensible to all participants to ensure successful outcomes. The framework includes the development of simplified training tactics and a project playbook to streamline learning and implementation. It also emphasizes the need for transparency and visibility across all projects on a global scale, utilizing simplified performance-enhancing tools, and ensuring sustainability for ongoing maintenance of project management practices.

Central to this approach is the commitment to extreme adaptability and change management, challenging traditional methodologies to better serve diverse and inclusive communities. By thinking outside the box, this framework not only showcases how project management can drive transformative change but also illustrates how evolving training methods can significantly influence and impact global practices, fostering inclusive and adaptable project management environments that serve our staff and our communities.

Key Takeaways

  • Accessibility & Inclusion in Project Management: Implementing easy to understand training tactics and creating a project playbook are essential for making project management principles accessible, especially in environments involving individuals with little to no knowledge of project management, or individuals with intellectual disabilities implementing a project. This ensures that all participants can effectively engage and contribute to their project’s success.
  • Transparency & Communication: Establishing clear visibility through a centralized repository and utilizing simplified performance-enhancing tools provide leaders, stakeholders, and project managers with the necessary insights to manage and track projects and resources more effectively and collaboratively.
  • Sustainability of Practices: Ensuring the long-term viability of project management practices through sustainable strategies and ongoing maintenance is crucial. This involves creating frameworks that not only address immediate project needs but also support continuous improvement and adaptability, thereby maintaining the effectiveness and relevance of project management methodologies over time.
